ah welcome back we are here with the ai jam i guess this is a podcast at this point i'm nate i've also got with me allison and rob and
- Rob Smith
What's up?
- Nate Haskins
today we're just going to briefly talk about what the format is for this jam and kind of how this came about so um i mean to just jump right into this thing to me this is kind of inspired by some of these other jams we've done in the past so as a group we've built um for among other things video games in the past and we'd go to these jams this is about
- Nate Haskins
uh maybe 10 years ago at this point
- Allison Haskins
It has been that long.
- Allison Haskins
I can't believe it's been that long, but it has.
- Nate Haskins
and the format is you show up with yourself or your team you don't have to have a team but if you got some friends that's fun here too and uh you meet up with everybody else at a location so we're going to announce our location a little bit later
- Nate Haskins
but um and then we may do a theme too so with these jams there's a theme where they'll say okay everybody we're going to do something about the ocean and so then at that point the trailer would be some kind of element having to do with the ocean
- Allison Haskins
And it's really broad too,
- Allison Haskins
right?
- Allison Haskins
Like it could take place, like your trailer could take place on the beach next to the ocean or it could be in the ocean or on a boat or it's really broad.
- Nate Haskins
it's a broad theme and the reason we use a theme sometimes is just to try to
- Nate Haskins
Try to pull everybody together to say like okay today is the day we're all making something today It can be tempting to come in with something you've already made for this particular jam It's really just kind of laissez-faire and fun We want people to come in and make something fresh if they can but it's not really militant. I mean
- Nate Haskins
But overall, there's a theme and you follow it.
- Nate Haskins
So from there, once that theme's announced,
- Nate Haskins
then the jam begins. And so you've got a few hours to then sit down with your computer, your laptop,
- Nate Haskins
whatever your gear is,
- Nate Haskins
load up your software and then start to plan out what you're going to do.
- Allison Haskins
Yeah, it's a nice way to focus on something for a few hours.
- Allison Haskins
Since we're so busy.
- Allison Haskins
you know i i miss those days when we would get together i i especially like miss like the scatter jam where we would like meet up and then we get the theme and then we go back to either your place or we go to our individual houses and then we would like divvy up the work like nate would do all the programming allison would do all the artwork i would do all the sound and and voiceover and all that kind of stuff and then we would send each other we would send nate who was like head of the project we would send him all of our
- Allison Haskins
of our files and then he would put it all together and it was just really cool to see how things like that would turn up you know like uh
- Allison Haskins
I remember that one video that we did.
- Allison Haskins
It was for the Scatter Jam,
- Allison Haskins
and it was Agatha.
- Nate Haskins
ah yeah sis
- Allison Haskins
And it was like,
- Allison Haskins
Uncle Clay,
- Allison Haskins
is that you?
- Nate Haskins
you know here we are almost 10 years later i remember it like it was yesterday so that's the other thing that's fun about these you create a lot of fun memories and you have a good time with this and so the format is basically like uh the end result is you record your trailer which again is approximately between three minutes i mean sorry 30 seconds to a minute
- Nate Haskins
minute and then uh you're going to upload that to youtube when you're done it could be your personal channel whatever so people can see it and then at the end we're going to let people come up and we're going to play the trailers we're going to watch the trailers together and that'll be a good time
- Allison Haskins
And then we've also kind of discussed actually either before the trailer plays or after the trailer plays,
- Allison Haskins
like what techniques,
- Allison Haskins
what language,
- Allison Haskins
what AI languages did they use? Like what kind of...
- Allison Haskins
you know how did they get to this point so that other people in the room can kind of learn and take bits and pieces as they need to and kind of apply it to to what they're doing too which
- Nate Haskins
Yeah, absolutely.
- Allison Haskins
is the whole purpose if you remember at the game jams that was kind of the whole reason behind the game jams was to
- Allison Haskins
find different creative ways to get from point a to point b because you may have a certain way of doing things i may have a certain way of doing things but your way of doing things is a lot more seamless and a lot more straightforward so i may borrow your technique or something and apply it to my craft
- Nate Haskins
Right.
- Allison Haskins
it's
- Nate Haskins
We're going to get Jeremy in here at some point and he's got a lot of great techniques for AI video production and creation.
- Nate Haskins
So that's a good point.
- Nate Haskins
A lot of this is about just everyone coming together,
- Nate Haskins
having fun and learning all from
- Allison Haskins
about
- Nate Haskins
each
- Allison Haskins
having
- Nate Haskins
other.
- Allison Haskins
fun
- Allison Haskins
and
- Allison Haskins
Mm
- Nate Haskins
each other
- Allison Haskins
-hmm
- Allison Haskins
and
- Nate Haskins
so
- Allison Haskins
learning learning and having fun
- Nate Haskins
really
- Allison Haskins
no
- Nate Haskins
not hyper competitive or anything um
- Allison Haskins
do
- Nate Haskins
and so as rob mentioned the idea is you go up uh after your movie has been after your trailer has been played and then that gives you an opportunity to say a little piece about what you just made and also people can ask you some questions so it'd be like a pretty quick qa afterwards
- Allison Haskins
you remember that one jam that uh butterscotch shenanigans did with like the birds and they were like
- Allison Haskins
do you remember that it's
- Nate Haskins
Oh, yeah, they were fishing in the sky or something.
- Allison Haskins
like it was like sky fishing but they were like bird like fish fishing for birds yeah that was freaking hilarious you know so just some of the stuff that those game jams brought out it was like that is some really funny stuff and really original and so you know that's also a purpose too like what inspired you
- Allison Haskins
Why did you want to go that route?
- Allison Haskins
How did you get go down that route things like that?
- Nate Haskins
You got it. Allison,
- Nate Haskins
any wrap up here? We're at about the five minute mark and then we'll close it out.
- Allison Haskins
Well,
- Allison Haskins
the tools are so new it is fun to share how you did things because yeah, they keep changing So you really just got to keep practicing stuff and it's just gonna be very creative a fun time
- Nate Haskins
Creative fun time.
- Nate Haskins
So that's what we're cooking up here.
- Nate Haskins
We encourage you to continue to follow what we're doing as this develops.
- Nate Haskins
and so you'll be the first to know when this invitation comes out and we're excited for it in the meantime we're going to keep creating a little bit more content like this just to let you know what's going on with it all right thanks a lot for allison and rob i'm nate we'll see you next time
The episode describes an AI film jam in St. Louis where creators make short AI trailers around a loose theme and share techniques. Participants may attend solo or with a team, build something fresh in a few hours, and present a 30–60 second trailer for group feedback and Q&A.
